If you are contacting the Prosecuting Attorney Ron O'Brien's office via email, there are a few things you need to know prior to sending your email to our office:

  • In the event of an emergency, dial 911. You will be connected with law enforcement personnel who will assist you with the emergency. For non-emergencies, the most effective way to report a crime is to contact your local police agency.
  • The primary investigative agency for a crime is the municipal police department in the area where the crime occurred. If there is no municipal police department in the area where the crime occurred, the crime should be reported to the County Sheriff's office. Once the police agency completes their initial investigation, if they determine that there is sufficient evidence of criminal conduct, they will prepare a summary of their investigation. They will then either forward their summary to the Columbus City Attorney's office for misdemeanor crimes or they will forward their summary to our office, the County Prosecutor, for felony crimes. These summaries will then be reviewed.
  • Your email will be answered as soon as possible. If you are a victim and you have the name and/or telephone number of the prosecutor and/or victim advocate assigned to your case, you may receive a faster response by contacting them directly or by calling 614.525.3555.
  • Prior to sending an email, you may want to check our FAQ section in the event that we have addressed your concern and/or question.
  • Because of certain restrictions, we are unable to provide specific legal advice, summaries of the law, or attorney referrals.
  • If you are a defendant in a pending case, we cannot communicate directly with you. All contact must be through your attorney
