FORMER BMV EMPLOYEE AND CO-DEFENDANT INDICTED FOR TAMPERING WITH RECORDS

Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announces that the Franklin County Grand Jury has returned indictments against two individuals, Betina Young, age 43, and Sekou Bayoh Kpoto, age 41, both each for five counts (F-3) Tampering with Records. Betina Young was a former BMV employee at the Gahanna License agency (#2528), who allegedly falsified BMV records to show that applicants presented necessary documentation to verify immigration status and secure the issuance of valid state ID Cards and/or Licenses. None of the applicants were U.S. citizens. Young and Kpoto allegedly charged individuals several hundred dollars to obtain the State ID Cards and/or Licenses, and once the fee was collected, Kpoto directed each individual to Young for the processing of the ID Cards and/or Licenses. “This has been a thorough investigation, which is still on-going, conducted by the Bureau of Motor Vehicles, with assistance from United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Homeland Security Investigations (HSI)”, O’Brien stated. |

MAN INDICTED FOR MULTIPLE STABBINGS OUTSIDE DOWNTOWN OFFICE BUILDING

Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced today that the Franklin County Grand Jury has returned an indictment against John W. Mallett, age 37, for five counts (F-1) Attempted Murder,
four counts (F-2) Felonious Assault, and one count (F-1) Felonious Assault, for a total of ten counts, in connection to the March 14, 2012 stabbings that occurred inside the office building located at 150 E. Gay Street in downtown Columbus. At approximately 12:41 pm, Columbus Police received numerous 911 calls reporting a male with a knife inside the office building which houses the Miami-Jacobs Career College, offices of the Ohio Attorney General, and a restaurant. Mallett has been indicted for allegedly stabbing Jean Michal Desir, age 55, Jeffrey Maloon, age 53, Donte M. Dunnagan, age 36, and Gerald Dowe, Jr., age 29. It is alleged in the indictment that the defendant charged CPD Officer Deborah Ayers prior to being captured. |

INDICTMENT OF SEVERAL PEOPLE CONNECTED TO ARSON ATTEMPT AT FREBIS FOOD CENTER

Today, Prosecutor Ron O’Brien announced that the Franklin County Grand Jury has returned several indictments against individuals allegedly involved in an arson attempt at Frebis Food Center, located at 1505 Frebis Avenue. The charges range from Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Arson (F-2), Attempted Aggravated Arson (F-2), Attempted Arson (F-5) and Possessing Criminal Tools (F-5). Those indicted were Elvis W. Bowen, age 37, from the Grandview Heights/OSU area, Naser Saleh, age 45, from Upper Arlington, and Muhammad Mahmoud Alrimawi, age 32, from Hilliard. Investigators began surveillance of the food mart between March 6th and 27th, 2012, after they heard of an alleged plot to burn the market down. O’Brien said, “Without the surveillance conducted by the Columbus Fire and Police Departments in their thorough investigation, this market would have gone up in flames and created a threat of harm to the entire surrounding neighborhood”. |
