Judge Patrick McGrath was born in Flint, Michigan, and raised in Grand Blanc, Michigan. He received his B.A. degree from The Ohio State University in 1964 and following a period of post-graduate study at the University of Michigan, Judge McGrath received his Juris Doctorate from The Ohio State University, College of Law in 1968. He then was in private practice in a small trial intensive firm from 1968 to 1970 specializing in personal injury and worker's compensation law. He joined the staff of the Columbus City Attorney's office in 1970 and was promoted to senior assistant city attorney in 1975 and chief counsel in charge of all city civil litigation for a ten-year period from 1978 to 1988.

In 1988, Judge McGrath was elected to the General Division of the Franklin County Common Pleas Court where he served for sixteen years before election to the Tenth District Court of Appeals in 2004. While on the Common Pleas Court, Judge McGrath was elected five terms as Administrative Judge and two terms as Presiding Judge. Judge McGrath has been a member of the Franklin County Criminal Justice Planning Board, and the Ohio Supreme Court's Commission on Professionalism. He is a Fellow of the Columbus Bar Foundation; and member of the Legislative Committee of the Ohio Judicial Conference; the Judicial Administration and Legal Reform Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association; the Ohio Bar Association; the Ohio Judicial Conference; the Ohio Common Pleas Judges Association; various trial lawyer and defense lawyer organizations; as well as a member of the Columbus Bar Association and many of its committees.

Judge McGrath is a member of several charitable and civic associations. He is married and has one daughter. Judge McGrath, his wife and daughter reside in Dublin, Ohio.
