GOLD Plate Restaurant Initiative

A busy schedule leads to quick meals on the go so eating out is often the dinner of choice for many families living in the Whitehall area.  Even though families are spending more time consuming dinner somewhere else, making healthy decisions when dining out can lead to improved heart health.  Striving to develop a healthy community is a worthy endeavor, that’s why the Whitehall Heart Health Task Force has started the GOLD Plate program.

The GOLD in GOLD Plate stands for Great Options in Lower-fat Dining.  The purpose of the program is to acknowledge and recognize restaurants in the Whitehall area that are making efforts to offer healthy choices through menu items that are low fat and heart healthy.  The program also educates Whitehall families by encouraging them to ask restaurants for healthy menu options.

Listed below are the restaurants located in Whitehall that qualified as “GOLD Plate” establishments:

  • Subway (4343 East Main Street)
  • Empire Buffet (942 South Hamilton Road)
  • Butch’s Italian Café (4720 East Main Street)

There were several schools in the area that qualified as “GOLD Plate” establishments:

  • Beechwood Elementary (455 Beechwood Road)
  • Rosemore Middle School (4735 Kae Avenue)
  • Whitehall Yearling High School (675 South Yearling Road)

When dining out, residents should choose reduced fat dishes, lean meat or fish, vegetables instead of fried dishes, and low-fat desserts.
