Flu Cases on the Rise
The Franklin County Board of Health and Columbus Public Health jointly collect influenza surveillance data each week to determine the level of influenza (flu) in our community.
For the week ending January 26, 2008, the health department’s joint early warning surveillance systems showed an increase in flu activity. Early warning surveillance systems monitored by our public health staff every day include: influenza-like illness reports; school absenteeism; laboratory surveillance; emergency department visits; pneumonia and influenza mortality data; and over-the-counter medication sales.
“While we are starting to see an increase in flu and flu-like illnesses in the community, it is expected this time of year and levels are similar to trends seen last year,” said Susan Tilgner, Franklin County Health Commissioner.
The Franklin County Board of Health and Columbus Public Health encourage the following good health habits to help prevent the flu or flu-like illnesses:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
- Wash your hands often
- Get plenty of sleep
- Be physically active
- Drink plenty of fluids
- Eat nutritiously
If you do get sick, stay home. You should also get lots of rest, drink plenty of fluids, and avoid alcohol and tobacco use. There are over-the-counter medications available to relieve symptoms of the flu, but strictly follow package directions (especially with children and teens). Remember, serious illness from the flu is more likely in certain groups including those 65 and older, pregnant women, people with chronic medical condition and young children. Consult your doctor early on for best treatment.
“The single best way to prevent seasonal flu is to get your flu shot,” said Mysheika LeMaile-Williams, M.D., Medical Director for Columbus Public Health. “The good news is, it is not too late to get your shot,” she added.
Both the Franklin County Board of Health and Columbus Public Health still have flu vaccine available. For more information on the flu, tips for prevention, or where to get a flu shot visit www.franklincountyohio.gov/health or www.publichealth.columbus.gov.
