Rally for our Recovery!!

Every year we rescue dozens of nice dogs like these with special medical or treatment needs. They all have treatable illnesses that can be fixed with a little more time, money and TLC. However these expenses are not funded with public monies, so Friends of the Shelter contributes thousands of dollars each month for their care.

You can help by sponsoring one of these dogs to give it the chance for health and happiness that every dog deserves. Please donate to Friends of the Shelter! Your donations to FOTS are tax-deductible.

All of these lucky dogs have already been adopted
to loving homes thanks to Friends of the Shelter!!

Pete
Rescued!

He was labeled a mouthy, out-of-control teenage pup upon arrival, but within a two weeks of arriving at the dog shelter, this juvenile delinquent was quickly humbled by the parvo virus that nearly took his life.  Relying on humans to give him fluids, antibiotics, and vitamins intravenously, Pete soon became a perfect patient and was rewarded for his gentle manner and respect with small treats of food once he was able to eat again.  After leaving his parvo quarantine, Pete was a quick study for the dog park and learned how to play nicely with others, walk like a gentleman on a leash, and soon became quite the cuddlebug with the foster family that fought to save him.  Pete is well on his way to making an awesome family pet and is eager to spend his summer swimming, camping, hiking, or whatever his new family has in store for him.

Cece
Adopted!!!

Little CeCe certainly has the cuteness factor in her corner ... but the cuteness just starts with her appearance; just wait til you meet her personality!  CeCe is a people pleaser, a playful companion, and an excellent snuggler on those cold winter nights.  But CeCe hasn't had the easiest time of it over the last few months ... in fact, she came into the shelter's care unable to stand due to a broken right front foot and left rear leg.  Thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Shelter, however, we have been able to give CeCe her mobility back and with that, her life.  CeCe is on the mend now and learning basic 'good citizen' manners.  Vet reference required for adoption.

Bree
ADOPTED!!

Day one, could only pick up her head; Day 2, she could sit up but could not/would not use her back legs; Day 3, she was able to pull herself around her cage using her front legs for maneuverability; and on Day 4, she stood up, albeit very wobbly but she was up. Xrays showed a badly fractured pelvis, but none of the fractures were surgical fixes ... only time and lots of pain medication would hopefully give her a pain free, functional life ... and it did. We are now six weeks (2nd week of March) from her original losing battle with a car and look at her now. Bree is as social, happy, and eager to enjoy life as they come ... she is bouncy and ready to play ... and now she can. CT & HB. Established Vet Reference required.

Rachel
ADOPTED!!

She may look pathetic, and she was a few months ago, but not anymore ... this girl is rip-roarin' ready to go and meet her match!  Rachel came to us the victim of a hit and run car accident, leaving her hobbling around with a broken elbow that cracked and crunched with her every step.

Thanks to Friends of the Shelter and a very talented surgeon, Rachel's injuries were repaired and although a little 'heavier' in her left forelimb from some metal implants, she is pretty much good as new and eager to share adventures with anyone looking to take them with her.

Rachel is crate trained, housebroken, eager to please, and full of spirit.  She enjoys trips to the park, swimming, camping, hiking ... whatever you and the outdoors will offer ... but at the end of the day, she is a true snugglebug companion at heart, so don't let her tomboy-ish ways fool you.  Rachel can be a little exhuberant in her play, so not all canines appreciate her, but she does enjoy the company of others.  CT and HB.

Fiona
ADOPTED!!

They don't come much more resilient, more affectionate, or more appreciative than little Fi. She was far from the picture of health when she came to us but thanks to Friends of the Shelter, she is now ready to start the second stage of her life, finally heartworm negative, spayed, and freshly dentaled.

She can be very shy in new situations but thrives on stability and a quiet environment. Fi enjoys the company of other animals but is content to be your one and only as well. She is 110% a snuggling couch potato princess! Fiona is CT & HB but does not need to be crated. She would love a gentle hand and a warm home to share this holiday season with.

Cecil
ADOPTED!!

Little Cecil is about a sweet and pathetic as they come.  At barely 8 weeks, Cecil's body already shows long term evidence of pain and neglect.  Whether he was kicked, stepped on, or fell, Cecil has been hobbling around on a broken left rear leg for a few weeks now, as indicated by the lack of muscle mass in his thigh.

This little guy is going to be ok, though, thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Shelter and those people who believe in giving our canine companions a second chance.

Cecil is currently recovering from the kennel cough bug and gaining his strength for the big surgery ahead which will give him is leg function back and a life without pain.  He is working on crate training and LOVES to be held.

Gwen
RESCUED!!

Gwen is nothing short of a goofball!  Although temporarily out of commission due to a pelvis fracture when she was injured while running loose and looking for the people who abandoned her, she is well on her way to a complete recovery and looking forward to the season's next snowfall.  Gwen is quite a social butterfly - she is sure everyone is her best friend and that everyone wants to be kissed by her!  She is crate trained, almost housebroken.  Fenced yard and another canine companion would be ideal for her!

Nellie
RESCUED!!

Little Nellie is eagerly awaiting someone to take her home and call her their own. She is full of life, eager to please, and LOVES to play with anyone who will give her the time.

Nell did not get off to the easiest start in our shelter system, but thanks to our Friends of the Shelter, she had the opportunity to battle parvovirus and pneumonia and she came out on top.

Nellie is a little shy at first but it doesn't take long for her to settle in to her goofball ways.  Nellie is CT and nearly HB.  She would do best in an active family with another canine companion and a fenced yard.

Nellie is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

Owen
ADOPTED!!

Little Owen is the dog shelter's version of the original 'hush puppy' ... is he not too cute for words?  Owen came to the dog shelter an unclaimed stray, hobbling along with a broken leg that appeared to have been that way for a period of time.  Lucky for Owen, he is getting the medical care, TLC and rest he needs to mend thanks to the generosity of Friends of the Shelter.  He is your typical hound dog ... excellent senses, strong instincts, and a howl not to be mistaken.  Owen looks forward to many years of fun in his future.  CT and working on HB.  Fenced yard and vet reference required.

Freckles
ADOPTED!!

Freckles is a fun, eager to explore, eager to please girl who has been very tolerant of her months of cage rest and splint changes following an impressive fracture to her left front leg.  Although 'lucky' is usually not a term one associates with a broken leg, Freckles was actually lucky x 2 ... first off, the force that caused her leg to break did not knock it out of alignment so internal fixation surgery to fix the leg was not necessary, and secondly, those who believe in second chances were there to give Freckles her chance at a happy ending by supporting her recovery in our offsite infirmary care program.  Freckles is now splint free and finishing out her cage rest as her leg muscles strengthen following weeks of being immobilized.  She is crate trained, housebroken, good with other dogs, and doing fairly well with her leash manners.  Freckles is looking forward to spending the upcoming spring exploring with her new family ... ideally one that likes the outdoors and hiking as much as she does.

Mario
ADOPTED!!

There are no limits to his energy, no barriers to his adventure, and no damper to his spirit!  Little Mario was abandoned by his owner after they broke his leg but thanks to our generous FOTS donors, he is getting a second chance at finding a forever home.  Being a young pup, Mario's bones were eager to heal and after a LONG month of cage rest, he is well on his way to making a full recovery as he eases back into activity with some physical therapy.  He is very much looking forward though to romping and playing with others - dogs, cats, people, anyone who is up to keeping up with him!

Mario is CT but his HB is a work in progerss as he comes off complete cage rest.  Mario's new home should have a fenced yard, another canine companion of similar activity, and an established vet reference.

Chase
ADOPTED!!

This little guy is a true survivor… and given the chance to do so by the generosity of FOTS donors. Chase came to the shelter dragging a rear leg with multiple fractures and missing a considerable amount of fur and skin after being caught by a car tire. He endured an extensive surgery and daily bandage changes for a month to get to where he is today… but those few tough weeks were well worth the new life he is ready to begin.

Chase is quite a little love bug and very social with everyone he meets, although a little shy at first. Chase is crate trained and ready to start housebreaking. Chase is looking for a forever home with another playful pup, no kids under 8, and an established vet reference.

Abel
ADOPTED!!

Abel is lucky to be sitting here, pathetically posing for this picture ... you see, he and his brother Cain got a little too carried away in their curbside wrestling match and Abel ended up getting smacked, twice, by the passing traffic.  Not only did he sustain a double fracture to his front leg, but also had his hip dislocated on the same side.  Unable to ambulate on only 2 legs, Abel laid alongside the road waiting for the third and final blow to finish him off ... but it never came, instead came a good samaritan who got him to the safety of a local vet (a short lived safety) .. who then called the department of animal care and control and had him picked up by a dog warden.

This is the point where the true heroes of Abel's life stepped in - the generous financial supporters of Friends of the Shelter - and allowed his care and recovery to be pursued by a talented surgeon and dedicated foster home.

Abel's broken front leg is healing nicely, his spirit is well, and we are optimistic his hip will stay in the socket, although a few more weeks of intense cage rest will tell.  Abel is CT & nearly HB.  He is simply a gentle giant and we look forward to watching him bounce around once his restrictions have been lifted.  Abel is in foster care, email Erin if you are interested in adopting him when he's ready.

Rusty
ADOPTED!!

This shy, sweet boy has had some rough knocks in his first few months - both mental and physical injuries which have left him very submissive in personality, very pathetic in appearance, and very sore in movement as he recovers from a bone chip in his shoulder.

Rusty is a trooper though and he is working to heal and trust again.  Instead of turning his head and trying to hide when you walk in the door, he now gives a quick thump of his tail and raises his head just enough to see if you might have a treat to share with him.  He's learning to walk on a leash too, and making canine friends with any opportunity that presents itself.  Rusty still has several weeks of R&R ahead of him, but he has many shelter friends working together to help him along the way.

Dill

Little Dilly just can't catch a break ... he's been a frequent flier to the dog shelter since he was a wee pup ... apparently he just hasn't found a responsible human yet ... maybe that could be you?

Dill is just as sweet as can be ... but he is a little wild man and has lots and lots of energy.  Dill HATES being crated, which makes the current strict cage rest he is enduring from his broken leg VERY difficult, but he and his foster mom are getting by with the promise that his next home will be his last home!

Dilly is CT and HB, loves other dogs, and is actually very people oriented.  Dill's next home should have a fenced yard and another active canine companion.  Vet reference required.

Thanks to the generosity of FOTS, Reba was able to regain her rear leg function with a special surgery and now lives without pain with her every step.

Reba is pretty submissive with other dogs and people and very reluctant to pose for a good picture, but don't let that stop you from considering her for your family ... she may just be the missing piece you've been looking for.  Reba is CT & HB.  She would like a home with no children under 12, an established vet reference, and a four legged friend too would be great!  Reba is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

She LOVES her people and prefers to snuggle any time she has a chance.  She enjoys the company of other dogs and is looking forward to running laps with the other pups.  Her limp will be present for several months to come as she strengthens her leg and rebuilds muscle mass, but her xrays look great and her spirit is optimistic!  Camry prefers to not be crated and is HB.  Camry would do best in a home with a fenced yard as she prefers to potty in privacy.  Established vet reference required.

Morris hasn't had the easiest way to get to this adoption page, but after a brave battle with parvovirus and pneumonia, he is here and ready to find a family to call his own.

Morris is crate trained, housebroken, loves people of all ages, and does well with basic commands.  He is exactly the kind of dog that makes a person a lab lover.  Vet reference required.

Morris is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

Riley
ADOPTED!!

Riley made a subdued entrance to the dog shelter as a mellow, unclaimed stray who was succumbing to the frequently fatal parvovirus, but he's planning on making a bold exit as he has beat the virus and is ready to make up for lost time!

Ri is full of life, exploding with playful and ornery antics, and ready to learn how to be an upstanding canine citizen. He would love a familiy who is as eager to teach as he is to learn. Riley is crate trained and working on house breaking, a big fan of peanut butter kongs, and loves to watch the world go by from the window of a car.

Riley is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

Freddy
ADOPTED!!

Freddy is a shy, insecure guy who wasn't socialized much as a pup, then dumped on the streets with his sister Faith to fend for themselves among people who didn't want canine visitors, only to end up at the dog shelter very sick and needing further isolation for treatment of parvovirus. Although a little 'tough' on the outside, Freddy's affections are worth the extra time and effort it takes to break down his walls.

He's a spunky guy who needs gentle guidance and would thrive with regular socialization. Would make a great second dog with an experienced owner...he loves to race around the yard with other pups! Very trainable. Freddy is being boarded offsite and he's ready for adoption. Please donate to Friends of the Shelter to help continue our boarding program.

Freddy is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him.

Evie
ADOPTED!!

This little girl has had a rough start of things and is a little hesitant of new people and situations, but as you can see, once she realizes she can trust you, she is all smiles and eager to please. Evie is just as sweet as can be, hopelessly devoted to her person.. In fact, she'll take a person over the companionship of another dog any time.

Evie's recently been hit by a car and sustained an abdominal hernia, but we were able to repair that hernia thanks to FOTS and she is not 'good as new' and healing nicely in her foster home. She is housebroken, crate trained, a wonderful snuggler, and excellent passenger, and quite a lady on a leash. Evie is about full grown at 50 lbs.

Evie is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

Frankie
ADOPTED!!

Fabulous, fantastic, fiesty Frankie! This spunky little guy will make you laugh so hard you'll cry as he entertains you with his antics and then turns into a wet noodle when you roll him on his back and cradle him like a baby.

Frankie is enduring the final weeks of cage rest following a broken hand and is looking forward to being able to romp and play like pups do.

He is CT, working on HB, and LOVES peanut butter kongs. Frankie is at a perfect age and activity level for puppy preschool. No kids under 10 years. Vet reference required.

Mini must go to a home that has a current, full-service vet reference, and kids 10+.

Mini would love to go to a home with another dog, and no cats. She is quite the "talker" when crated, so please, no apartments/condos.

Victoria
ADOPTED!!

The details of Victoria's story are unknown to us, but someone or something broke this little lady's leg and left her to hobble around in excruciating pain for weeks or longer before she was fortunate enough to be found by an animal control officer and brought to the dog shelter.

Had it not been for the generosity of FOTS donors, Victoria would not have had a chance at keeping all four legs, maybe not even a chance at all, but people who have never even met this sweet girl have enabled her to have her leg fixed and she is on her way to making a full recovery, which will give her full use of a once painfully crippled leg.

Tori has a wonderfully gentle disposition and thrives on your attention, especially if it involves sitting in your lap. Victoria is recovering in a foster home and is ready to move into a place to call her own, ideally one with small breed experience, no kids under 8 years, and a well established vet history to continue on with her short term recovery.

Victoria is crate-trained, housebroken and social with others. Victoria is in foster care, email Erin to meet her!

Madeline
ADOPTED!!

Gentle personality, social with others, excellent passenger, housebroken and does not need to be crated, quite a couch potato … and has been living with a dislocated hip for months, possibly longer.

But thanks to FOTS, Madi is going to get the surgery she needs to make her life more comfortable and her mobility less awkward. And somewhere out there, is one of the luckiest people who will find themselves the proud owner of this sweetheart once she is ready to be back on her feet again.

Madeline is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

Zach
ADOPTED!!

Zach is an EXTRA SPECIAL guy, and he needs an extra special home, with extra patience and accomodations for his limitations. You see, Zach took a bad fall a few weeks ago which has left him with some permanent neurologic deficits that affect his balance and his ability to navigate.

Other than being a little uncoordinated however, Zach is full of puppy orneriness, loves to play with his toys and other dogs, is comical to watch chase the cats, and is quite the snuggler after a full day of play. He walks pretty well on leash, as long as the ground is flat, but stairs and inclines can be dangerous for him as he can't maintain his balance.

Zach is looking for a home with previous special needs experience, a well established full service vet reference, and no kids under 8 years.

Zach is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

Griffey
ADOPTED!!

Griffey came to us with a pelvis injury and then fell victim to parvo, but thanks to the support of FOTS, Griffey was given a chance to fully recover.

Griffey is a happy go lucky, devoted and loving boy. He is 110% dog! He would love to have someone who is home a lot or has another dog to keep him company. Griffey loves going on long walks and craves attention! He will be your best snuggle partner.

He is playful with dogs, indifferent to cats, and needs a house with kids 10+. He is housebroken and needs a little help with crate training. Vet reference required. Herding breed experience would be helpful, or previous training experience. Vet reference required.

Griffey is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

Maggie
ADOPTED!!

Dumped on the side of the road and then smacked by a car when she tried to find her way back home, little Maggie has endured some excruciating pain to get where she is today!

Although lucky enough to survive her unfortunate run-in with a motor vehicle, Maggie was extra lucky to find herself carried to safety by an animal control officer so that her pain could be managed and her broken bones given the time to heal.

Now well on her way to a full recovery thanks to a loving foster home and the generosity of the FOTS donors, Maggie awaits someone to choose her to be their own and to keep her safe. She is full of life and ready to make up for the time she lost over the last few weeks. Her pictures don’t do her cuteness justice, you just have to meet her in person!

Maggie's new family must have an established full service vet reference! Maggie is in foster care, please email Erin to meet her!

Fritz
ADOPTED!!

Fritz took a while to make it to our
adoptables page because first he had to fight his way through parvo and pneumonia, but fight he did and now this big teddy bear is ready to run, play, and meet his match!

Fritz is a goofy, awkward (in his movements) teenage boy who is still learning the basics of walking on a leash, housebreaking, and greeting those he meets with a little less exhuberance!

He's a quick study though and very eager to please, so it shouldn't be long before Fritz is on his way to being a model citizen. If you are up for teaching, Fritz is up for learning! He would benefit most from a new home with active, dog savy, individuals who are dog park regulars and are interested in obedience training.

Fritz is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

Fritter
ADOPTED!!

Little Fritter came to us with a broken paw. Thanks to the generosity of FOTS and a couple of saint-like foster parents (you have to be good to keep this guy on cage rest!), Fritter is well on his way to a full recovery. He still has a couple of weeks until he can resume full puppy play.

Frit is fine with other dogs and cats. He is looking for a home with an established veterinary reference and kids 8+.

To help others like Fritter, please donate to Friends of the Shelter. Fritter is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

PLX was yet another stray left to defend herself in the streets of Columbus. She almost lost her life to parvo but was thankfully found in time and Friends of the Shelter was able to financially provide for her treatment.

She has fully recovered and is ready to bounce into a new home and family. Happy, playful and ready for fun, PLX is good with dogs, cats, kids 6+ and is CT and HB. Vet ref required.

Mandi
ADOPTED!!

The real story will never be known, but one can only imagine what this sweet girl has been through as one watches her hobble around on four injured legs. Initially thought to have broken bones, Mandi in fact suffered from dozens of deep puncture wounds and ripped off foot pads from being attacked prior to her rescue by our dog wardens.

She is now resting comfortably and her wounds are healing, but it will take time before she will trust her canine companions fully again and before we know if any of her injuries have caused permanent damage to the tendons and ligaments in her rear legs. One thing is for certain though, she is a keeper and will make a wonderful companion for a Boxer savy family! Established full service vet reference required.

Porter
ADOPTED!

Porter is as lucky as he is adorable! This little guy came to the shelter as a sickly stray pup. Thanks to the generosity of FOTS, some dedicated volunteers, and a great spirit on Porter’s part, he won the Parvo battle and is ready to find a wonderful home willing to love and care for him in the manner he deserves.

He has a great personality and loves to play with dogs, cats and people of any age. Still in the throes of puppyhood, Porter is working on learning basic commands and housebreaking. Vet reference required.

He's a wonderfully gentle, goofy guy who loves to run and play with the other dogs, but is also content to just hang out with you. CT & HB.

Sullie is in need of a dedicated owner with an established vet ref. Sullie is in foster care, please email Erin to meet him!

ADOPTED!!!

Looking for a SPECIAL Boxer Buddy ... Dyna is a sweet, incredibly devoted little girl who has had a very rough start, complete with a broken leg and severe malnutrition, not to mention being bullied by people and other dogs alike because she was a weakling.

Dyna's got a survivor spirit though and still hopes to find her happy ending. She is an awesome snuggler, a great passenger, a wonderful playmate and a nice combination of couch potato and agility competitor. Dyna's long term needs will include a special diet and some extra patience for housebreaking. Vet reference required.
