Deputy Wardens with the Franklin County Department of Animal Care and Control receive
nearly 16,000 requests for service annually. The majority of these service requests involved
complaints of dogs running loose.
Over 85% of these service requests from Franklin County residents originate within the
city limits of Columbus.
Over 7,000 criminal charges are filed annually in Franklin County Municipal Court against dog
owners by Franklin County Deputy Wardens.
Nearly sixty percent of these charges are filed for failing to license a dog (ORC 955.21).
Deputy Wardens impound approximately 8,000 dogs annually for running at large, not being
licensed, and various other reasons.
Over 20 percent of the dogs that are impounded annually by Franklin County Deputy Wardens
are a breed of dog commonly known as a Pit Bull.
Deputy Wardens are subpoenaed into Franklin County Municipal Court over 600 times annually to
testify in cases in which they have filed criminal charges against dog owners.
