Volunteering At The Shelter

A large part of The Franklin County Dog Shelter’s success in placing adoptable dogs comes from the dedicated efforts of our wonderful volunteers!

Our facility is old and cramped, the wards are loud and things can be a little messy at times, but...
...if you can get past all that, volunteering your time to help the dogs here can also be extremely rewarding!

We are always looking for volunteers to assist with activities such as:

  • Dog Walking ~ Especially Needed!!!

Imagine how many people it takes to make sure every dog gets an opportunity for some fresh air, sunshine and a walk each day!

  • Front Lobby/Customer Assistance ~ Needed!!!

Weekdays 5-7 pm, and all day on Saturdays & Sundays. Help direct customers in the lobby and assist with dogs being adopted.

And many other important tasks:

  • Adoption Counselor
  • Experienced volunteers for evening playgroups
  • Bathing and Grooming Dogs
  • Kong Toy Peanut Butter Stuffers
  • Post-Adoption Follow-Ups By Phone
  • Assisting Veterinary Technicians in our clinic
  • Foster Care Program
  • Special Events Volunteers at offsite adoption events
  • Assisting with photos for the website
  • Collecting, picking up and delivering newspapers to the shelter

If you are interested in donating some of your time to the Franklin County Dog Shelter, please call Lou at (614) 462-7282 for more information or click here to download a volunteer application.  Once you complete an introductory orientation class, you can volunteer at anytime we are open, 7 days a week!

Please note, our mimimum age to volunteer at the shelter is 14 or older!

Some areas that especially need volunteers:

  • Additional Adoption Counselors to help with customer service each weekday 5-7 and anytime on Saturday or Sunday afternoons
  • Fostering sick puppies. Many of our dogs need time and love to help them recover from kennel cough, a common upper respiratory infection. All these dogs need more time to get well, but they can go home with meds & recover quicker, too! Call Erin at 462-5357 or visit the Franklin County Dog Shelter to learn more.
  • Photo helpers Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday afternoons
  • Kong toys - cleaning, stuffing, and distributing daily!
Kongs are a valuable entertainment and stimulation tool for the dogs at the shelter.
