Commissioner Dewey R. Stokes
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners serves as the administrative head of Franklin County Government. Together, the three-member Board manages nearly $1.2 billion in County funds, more than 130 County-owned buildings and serves as the County’s sole contracting and taxing authority. Recently, the Commissioners initiated a Managing for Results initiative that allows County government to operate more like private industry by focusing on accountability, results, customer service and financial management.

Franklin County Commissioner Dewey R. Stokes uses his background in public service to empower the underprivileged men, women and children in Franklin County. During his term as Commissioner, Stokes has been an outspoken supporter of the Healthy Start, Healthy Families program, which provides a safety net of medical coverage for our children who need it the most. His efforts also led to the construction of the Engagement Center at Maryhaven, a facility that helps homeless men and women find an alternative to life on the streets.
Prior to becoming Commissioner in 1995, Stokes was President of the National Fraternal Order of Police, an organization representing more than 250,000 law enforcement members nationwide. Before his term as FOP President, Stokes served more than 26 years as a Police Officer for the Columbus Division of Police. In 1993, he received the America’s Star Award from the U.S. Marshal’s Association for his career in law enforcement and his contributions to the profession.
Throughout his law enforcement and public service career, Stokes has remained committed to our community’s youth. In 1990, he was one of the first inductees into the National Boys and Girls Club’s Hall of Fame. Stokes continues to devote much of his free time to the Boys and Girls Club, Charity Newsies, Easter Seals, the Central Ohio Red Ribbon Campaign and the Holy Family Alumni Association of St. Cecilia Church.
