About Us

The Department of Fleet Management is responsible for approximately 400 vehicles operated by 27 different county agencies and departments that rely on their vehicles to provide services to the citizens of Franklin County. The largest agency served is the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. The fleet we maintain consists of police cruisers, inmate transport vehicles, cars, trucks, vans, buses, and utility vehicles.

Our eight employees are responsible for preventative maintenance, minor and major vehicle repairs, emergency repairs, towing of disabled vehicles, providing fuel, expediting accident repairs and claims, new vehicle purchasing and preparation for departmental use, and the disposal of obsolete vehicles. We also dispose of seized vehicles for the Sheriff’s Office.

In 2003, we began using the auction site, Govdeals.com, to dispose of obsolete vehicles. This allows us to dispose of the obsolete vehicles continually during the year as they are declared surplus. During that year, we disposed of 82 vehicles netting a total of $154,000. Keep checking our updated surplus inventory by clicking on “Related Links; Auction of Obsolete vehicles” in upper right corner of this page.

To help us maintain our goal of keeping each department on the road with vehicles that allow them to perform their jobs, we started using a computerized vehicle maintenance system in 1996. This, in conjunction with the operation of our own fueling facility, allows us to track all vehicles mileage so that all preventative maintenance repairs are performed on the time schedule recommended by the automotive manufacturer. This helps us to meet our objectives of keeping the vehicles on the roads, allowing those that rely on them to be able to perform their jobs. During 2003, we saved more than $137,000 on the cost of fuel by operating our own dispensing facilities.

In 2003, the fleet traveled more than 5.7 million miles serving the citizens of Franklin County, with the Sheriff’s Office accounting for more than 3.5 million of those miles.
