 Steps for Renters Call 2-1-1
- Recently passed federal legislation gives some protections to renters living in foreclosed properties:
- Check to see if the property that you live in is currently in foreclosure. The Franklin County Clerk of Courts website allows the public to search case information online at www.franklincountyclerk.com . In order to search you need to look up the property in the case information online section on the website and search by the landlord's name.
- Call 2-1-1 Call FirstLink at 2-1-1 (221-2255) for information on the services provided by Columbus Legal Aid, Columbus Urban League, and Senior Options or call the agencies directly.
- Contact Columbus Legal Aid at 241-2001 for advice and legal counsel for tenants. Legal Aid advises tenants regarding their rights, particularly as they pertain to notice and evaluating the current ownership status. Legal Aid can also negotiate on behalf of tenants with banks who have purchased the property through sheriff’s sale to extend the tenant’s stay in the property, create a new tenancy, or even negotiate a purchase of the property by the tenant.
- Two new rental assistance programs. Franklin County Commissioners have authorized two new rental assistance programs with the Franklin County Office of Aging to initiate a Senior Rental Rescue Funds program and the Columbus Urban League for a Rental Rescue Program.
- Call the Columbus Urban League at 257-6300. If you are a renter whose rental properties have been foreclosed upon you may be eligible to receive funds that will assist with relocation costs such as a deposit for a new apartment and for moving expenses.
- Call Senior Options at 462-6200 for information on the Senior Rental Rescue program. Free counseling and monetary relocation assistance is available to low-income senior households who are residents of Franklin County but live outside the City of Columbus. Senior renters facing foreclosure are often left with unpaid utility bills, moving costs and security deposits at their new homes. This program can help!
