FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: September 14, 2006

COLUMBUS – Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security Director, Gary L. Holland, recently attended a seminar on Emergency Management and Homeland Security conducted by The Ohio Emergency Management Agency, a division of the Ohio Department of Public Safety.

Seminar participants discussed issues and initiatives related to emergency management and homeland security training, hazardous materials/homeland security exercises, terrorism response, and concepts of operations related to Pandemic Influenza Preparedness. Additional discussion topics included the Incident Command System, requirements for the National Incident Management System, and the role of the State Disaster Relief Program.

County emergency management agencies plan, train, and exercise for any emergency/disaster, natural or man-made, that may impact the county. County EMAs coordinate the local disaster declaration and, when needed, coordinate response and recovery efforts with the Ohio EMA and FEMA. After the disaster is over, county EMAs work with local, state, and federal officials to identify and implement mitigation efforts, which may limit the impact of future disasters.

The Ohio Emergency Management Agency coordinates state assistance and resources during an emergency and prepares the state for all hazards through planning, training, exercises and funding activities at the state and local levels. This includes providing eligible assistance to individuals and governmental entities recovering from disaster-related damage and costs.
