Today, the Franklin County Board of Commissioners unanimously passed a resolution authorizing $132,301.68 to the Board of Elections to increase the maximum pay for poll workers from $95.00 to $107.91. This change will begin on March 4th 2008.
Commissioners and the Board of Elections are increasing the pay in response to Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner’s directive 2008-27, issued on February 20, 2008 that authorizes the maximum per diem for precinct election officials to be increased to $107.91 per election. The rate change follows the increase of the federal minimum wage from $5.15 per hour to $5.85 per hour.
Commission Board President Marilyn Brown stated, “This is an historic election and we are expecting a record turn out. The poll workers will be working very hard to ensure fair elections and we support Secretary Brunner’s plan to give the poll workers the maximum compensation allowed.”
Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy stated, “I really appreciate the hard work of the poll workers, and this stipend is well deserved.”
Commissioner Paula Brooks stated, “Every citizen owes a debt of gratitude to those who work extremely hard to ensure that our freedom endures. This overdue adjustment is the least we can do to assure adequate numbers of dedicated persons protecting your right to vote on Election Day.”
Commissioners noted that the long hours that poll workers endure should be rewarded with a pay increase. They are also encouraging more residents of Franklin County to become poll workers.
