In an effort to honor future leaders in Franklin County for Women’s History Month, Franklin County Commissioners presented ‘Women Making History’ awards to three young women from The Ohio State University and four Girl Scouts during General Session this week.
Commissioners recognized three OSU students who are making an impact in Franklin County through leadership and community service: Patricia Cunningham, a PhD. candidate studying Male Development and Curriculum; Monica Longmire, a Communications major with a concentration in Technology; and Michelle A. Millar, who is studying Public Accounting.
Four Girl Scouts were also recognized as future leaders: Rubie Saunders-Morris, LaMia Castlin, Casey O'Neal, and Samantha O'Neal.
“These phenomenal young women that we are honoring have made and will continue to make tremendous contributions to the future of Franklin County as Women Making History,” said Board President Commissioner Marilyn Brown. “As a Commissioner, one of the best parts of our jobs is to encourage future leaders and recognize them for the good work that they do in our community – I am so pleased to be doing just that.”
In addition to recognizing the Girl Scouts and students from OSU, the Commissioners recognized the achievements of three young women who TECHCORPS has recognized as future leaders in the field of technology.
Commissioners also recognized The Upper Arlington Women’s State Champion Swim Team for their achievements, setting three state records during the 2007-2008 seasons.
“We honor these young women as they help make history and set an example for others,” said Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy. “I remember what it felt like to be told I could not do something and these young women have shown that ‘no’ is not acceptable and that it is important that we strive to break down barriers in all walks of life.”
“Women comprise the majority of our citizens and serve our community in every walk of life – from homemaker to beautician to the board room,” said Commissioner Brooks. “In a year when a woman is running for President of the United States, we must show the youngest among us – like the Girl Scouts who visited us this week – that anything is possible in today’s society, whether they want to be scientists, teachers, or yes, even Presidents.”
OSU Assistant Vice President of Government Relations Dawn Tyler Lee stated, “Ohio State University students make wonderful achievements both in and out of the classroom. We appreciate Commissioners Brown, Brooks, and Kilroy taking the time to recognize young women in the Central Ohio community who are making history!”
Next week Commissioners’ will recognize professional women who have made an impact in Franklin County as ‘Women Making History’.
