Today, Franklin County Commissioners unanimously approved a series of resolutions which encouraged state law makers to review and support House Bill 502 and established a county policy which prohibits discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Commissioners noted that Franklin County must compete for the best employees it can recruit and retain, and discriminatory conduct in hiring and other employment related decisions undermines the county’s ability to attract and retain the best possible employees.

Franklin County employees are a vital part of creating and fostering efficient governmental practices and establishing this policy will ensure that they receive the support and services that they need and to which they are entitled.

“All of our employees and our residents should be treated with respect and dignity,” said Commission President Marilyn Brown. “I encourage our state lawmakers to pass this amendment into law because it is the right thing to do and so that Ohio residents, like Franklin County residents, have equal access to jobs.”

“Discrimination hurts all of us,” said Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy. “Adopting these resolutions today made a clear and affirmative statement that we will not discriminate in the workplace and that we stand for fairness under the law.”

“These bipartisan bills will ensure everyone among us will be able to serve our country, whether in the private sector, the public sector, or the armed forces,” said Commissioner Paula Brooks. “These actions are the right thing to do competitively, legally, and morally. All Franklin County employees and residents deserve equal protection under the law.”
