Today, County Commissioners and United Way of Central Ohio teamed up with the National Association of Counties (NACo) to announce a free Prescription Discount Card program. The card makes it possible for Franklin County residents to save an average of twenty-three percent (23%) on prescription medications.
Participation is easy. Everyone is eligible--no fees, no forms, no requirements, and no restrictions -- regardless of age, income or health care coverage.
“The Franklin County Prescription Discount card will benefit Franklin County residents, whether they have no prescription coverage or insurance which doesn’t cover all of their medication,” said Commissioner President Marilyn Brown.
Commissioner Mary Jo Kilroy emphasized, “This card will provide relief for people who work hard, but struggle with rising health care costs.”
“After learning about this impressive program through my involvement with NACo in 2006, I was excited to bring this program to Franklin County,” said Commissioner Paula Brooks. “I am proud that my colleagues and the prosecutor helped implement this prescription card program where there is absolutely no application, the savings are huge (upwards to 20-30%), and it can be used by ALL. Also, many insurance plans exclude fertility and other drugs; this one doesn’t.”
“United Way of Central Ohio is dedicated to helping people overcome barriers to accessing health and wellness services, and this discount card addresses one of the biggest barriers – cost,” said Janet E. Jackson, president and CEO, United Way of Central Ohio.
Commissioners noted that 950 counties nationwide have already established this program through NACo. Their residents had 6.5 million prescriptions filled that were not covered by insurance, and consumers saved $71 million, an average of 22.3%.
