Winners have been announced in the recycling contest between Columbus City Schools. The winners and runners-up will receive cash prizes from Giant Eagle Supermarkets. The “Put It In The Bin and Win” contest was designed to promote the location of drop off recycling at most of the City School Buildings.

The top schools are; A.G.Bell School, Mifflin Middle School and Linden McKinley High School based of the number of students enrolled at each school and the amount of recyclables collected at each school location. The winning civic association that paired with a school is The Salem Area Civic Association partnered with Salem Elementary School. (Winners & runner-ups listed on Page 3).

During the contest period last fall, 546,600 pounds of recyclables were collected at those new locations. "We're proud to see our kids get excited and engaged in recycling, a habit that will not only help the City, but the entire planet," said Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman. "I hope that each of them recycle more at school, at home, and help their families build this green habit as well."

SWACO Executive Director Ron Mills applauds residents as well who have adopted the new locations as their place to recycle. “We have heard from people on how they appreciate the convenience of having a more neighborhood based recycling system. They also tell us how they like the fact that the schools are showing students first hand the importance of recycling.”

While the contest has ended the rewards of recycling in Columbus and Franklin County continue notes Columbus City Schools Superintendent Gene T. Harris. “It's great to see that the students of Columbus City Schools take the future of our community to heart. Many students understand how their actions and the actions of others can have a positive impact on our community. Recycling is something that requires little effort, yet yields great benefits. I'm pleased that Columbus City Schools can be a part of this endeavor.”

“Giant Eagle is proud to sponsor recycling at Columbus City Schools,” said Giant Eagle Regional Vice President, Dave Daniel. “Since 1992, Giant Eagle’s Conservation Department has followed through on our commitment to environmental stewardship. We recycle tons of plastic, paper and cardboard each and every day, and we were honored to take this opportunity to encourage Columbus students to do the same.”

There are more than 190 SWACO drop-box recycling locations in Franklin County. Many are available to residents 24-hours a day. The Columbus City School locations are open for residential use from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Residents can find the location nearest them by logging on to www.swaco.org, entering their zip code under the picture of the green recycling bins, and clicking on “go.” There is no cost to residents to use drop-off recycling. Paper, cardboard, bottles, cans and other recyclables are accepted at the boxes. However, the recycling locations are not designed for the dumping of unwanted furniture or other bulk items. Columbus residents can schedule bulk pick up by calling the 311 Service Center at 645-3111 or going on line to 311.columbus.gov.
