The Ground Hog may be thinking there is more winter ahead, but a sure sign of spring is SWACO’s Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) flyers. Over 450,000 households in Franklin County will find the “hot pink” advertising strips on their doorsteps (in “The Bag”) this coming weekend (March 1-2). There will be 13 SWACO mobile HHW collection sites in 2008 starting with Dublin on April 26th and finishing in Grove City on October 18th.

“While we encourage residents to make use of our new permanent HHW location at 1249 Essex Avenue, we know they also appreciate the convenience of the neighborhood collections, says SWACO Executive Director Ron Mills. “Our biggest concern is the safe disposal of leftover paints, thinners, lawn chemicals and the like.”

In 2007, SWACO’s mobile HHW drives netted 1.2-million pounds of material from 12,500 households. That is an increase of about 200,000 pounds from 2006.

SWACO makes every effort to keep citizens time in line to a minimum, however residents can shorten or eliminate their wait at the collections by drying their Latex paint and then tossing it in the trash. Latex paint is primarily water and is not considered hazardous when dry. Residents can buy commercial hardeners, use sawdust or cat litter, or other drying agents.

Residents can also find the HHW schedule as well as a list of acceptable materials at www.swaco.org.
