The deadline for nominations to SWACO’s Emerald Awards has been extended until March 21, 2008. SWACO will honor the best and most innovative waste reduction programs environmental initiatives of 2007 on Wednesday May 7, 2008 at the Hilton Inn/Easton. Communities, organizations, businesses, schools, and individuals are encouraged to submit their nominations in six categories; Leadership, Partnership, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Environmental Education, and Litter Clean up.
Emerald Program Director Larry Spencer says there have been requests to extend the deadline. “In the last week or so, people have had to contend with the weather and some other unexpected problems. We want to make sure everyone has the opportunity to give us their best, so our committee has decided to extend the nomination deadline.”
Nomination information is available at www.swaco.org/Emeralds.aspx. Tickets for the luncheon are $25 per person or a table of 10 for $250. Reservations can also be made by calling 614-871-5100. This year’s Emerald trophies are being sponsored by Anheuser-Busch of Columbus. Deadline for reservations is Thursday, May 1, 2008.
The speaker for The 2008 Emeralds Luncheon is actor Ed Begley, Jr. Known for turning up at Hollywood events on his bicycle, he has served as chairman of the Environmental Media Association. Begley also participates on the boards of many other environmental organizations. His work has earned awards from many of those groups. Currently, he is the co-star of the hit HGTV series “Living with Ed,” a look at the day-to-day realities of “living green” with his not so environmentalist wife Rachelle Carson. Begley’s address is sponsored by Columbus Coca-Cola, a Coca-Cola Enterprises Company.
Master of ceremonies for this year’s Emerald Awards will be NBC-4’s Mike Jackson.
