Before deciding to use any pesticide on your property, do a quick accounting of what you want from your yard and the possible environmental impacts. Do you want golf-course quality turf grass and a garden suitable for a glossy magazine? Or are you willing to put up with some imperfections to minimize the effects of some pesticides on pollinators, including native bees and butterfly caterpillars? Also, think about cultural practices that can minimize the need for pesticide use. For instance, according to OSU Extension Ohioline, "The most important practices to reduce insect pests in lawns are proper turfgrass species and cultivar selection, thatch management, proper mowing and irrigation."
For more information, call the Franklin County Master Gardener's Garden Information Line at 688-GROW or go online to these OSU Extension articles: IPM for the Home Vegetable Garden and Managing Lawn Pests.
