Homeowners in unincorporated Franklin County and the cities of Canal Winchester, Columbus, Gahanna, Hilliard, Upper Arlington and Worthington are eligible to participate in the GreenSpot Rain Barrel Program. Residents learn about water conservation and storm water issues before buying an attractive terracotta-colored rain barrel for only $50.00.

Homeowners can register for and attend an in-person workshop or participate in an online program. Workshop attendees mail a check with their registration form and take the barrel home with them. Online participants watch a slide show, take a ten-question quiz and, after achieving a score of at least 70%, are given the option to order a barrel through PayPal. Online participants pick up the barrel at Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District office.

The County Board of Commissioners Rain Garden Challenge provides low to moderate income homeowners in unincorporated Franklin County with funding for the installation of a rain garden. This program has been extended through June 2012. The program saw the installation of four demonstration rain gardens at township facilities throughout the county last year. Rain gardens help control storm water runoff and reduce the risk of flooding and pollution in our local rivers and streams.
