Recorder Hawk Exposes Inflated Charges

Franklin County Recorder Daphne Hawk says her office is getting more complaints from

Central Ohioans upset about solicitations for copies of deeds. Some companies are

legitimate, some are just plain scammers.

“We see these companies spanning our area from time to time and not just in Franklin

County. We’re getting calls from all around the state,” says Hawk. “So clearly, these

unscrupulous companies are trying to capitalize on the rebounding market and home

buying season. They want you to think they are a government office offering a service,

and they want you to pay their inflated copying fees. We’re seeing companies charge

$50, $60 or nearly $90 for copies. Fact is, you can get the certified copies for just a

couple of bucks in my office in the Franklin County Courthouse. You can also view your

deed on our website at www.franklincountyohio.gov/recorder and print a non-certified

copy for free.”

Beware of the wording in these documents. They’re tricky. Call the Franklin County

Recorder’s Office at 614-525-3930 if you have any questions.
