Press Date: April 18, 2006

Under the leadership of Treasurer Richard Cordray, a group of Columbus area business leaders including lenders, realtors, builders, housing agencies and others have joined forces to combat the foreclosure problem in Franklin County. The group, now 70 members strong, has been meeting monthly since last December. They are looking for ways to reduce the number of foreclosures in the community. Plans are underway to accomplish the following:

  1. Write and distribute one-page community resource handouts designed to assist those facing home foreclosure.
  2. Develop public service announcements to educate those in foreclosure to call their lender’s loss mitigation department.
  3. Conduct homeowner information forums in the neighborhoods with the highest foreclosure rates in the County. These meetings are scheduled as follows:

Southeast – Mike Gencur, Coordinator 614-395-2456
May 9, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, South Side Neighborhood Pride Center at the South Side Settlement House, 310 E. Innis Avenue, Columbus

Southwest – Kathy Wilkins Coordinator 614-893-3181
May 10, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, Central Crossing High School 4500 Big Run South Rd Grove City 43123

Anyone wanting to learn more about dealing with foreclosure issues for themselves or in their neighborhood is cordially invited to attend. There will be representatives from various City and County agencies staffing tables and prepared to answer questions about foreclosure induced vacant and abandoned properties in the neighborhood. Representatives from the four HUD approved counseling agencies will also be available for individual foreclosure counseling. Treasurer Cordray will moderate a panel discussion including a realtor, a banker, a housing counselor and city attorney Richard Pfeiffer. Individual questions will be addressed from the floor. All are invited to attend.
