This week Treasurer Richard Cordray is unveiling “Kid’s Corner”, a kid friendly
addition to the Treasurer’s website at www.franklincountyohio.gov/treasurer/kidscorner/index.html that teaches children and their parents about money. The presentation will be made this Thursday, March 16th at 1:45pm to Mrs. Lowe’s Third Grade Class at East Columbus Elementary School, 734 Raring Avenue, Room 106. “We want to roll it out at an elementary school to best measure the reaction of our targeted audience,” said Cordray. “Kids are honest and if there is a way to improve the site, they will let us know.” According to Cordray, teaching kids about money is critical, especially when Ohio leads the nation in growth of bankruptcy. More young people file for bankruptcy than graduate from college.

“As parents, we should teach our children to be responsible with money so we can break the vicious cycle that many Americans face today,” said Cordray. “We developed Kid’s Corner as a useful tool both for parents in the home and for teachers in the classroom.”

Kid’s Corner features two cuddly characters named Money Monkey and Piggy Bank. They lead the child through an adventure based on a tour of the treasurer’s office. Children also learn about budgeting, saving, investing and
donating. What’s more, parents and teachers can learn fun ways to teach children about money.

The site also features games, jokes and riddles (Why is a river rich? It has two banks.) Young artists are asked to read a story explaining why the derivation of piggy bank is a misnomer that has nothing to do with pigs. They are then encouraged to submit a creative rendition of a savings bank and send it to the treasurer.
