Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan

Mitigation means taking steps to reduce the number of lives lost and the amount of property damaged when disasters occur.

To work well, these steps must be taken before the next disaster hits. This helps lower the human and financial costs later on. A mitigation plan includes projects that lower the chance that a natural disaster will cause serious damage. For example, a home might be raised higher off the ground so floodwaters can't reach it, or a tornado safe room might be built to protect people from injury. The federal government requires communities to have this plan and to fully update it every five years.
