Franklin County Board of Commissioners
Five neighborhoods in the Blacklick Estates subdivision of Madison Township will get new sidewalks, shared-use paths, and intersection improvements under a package of resolutions approved Tuesday by the Franklin County Board of Commissioners.
The projects are funded through Ohio's Safe Routes to Schools program, which directs state dollars toward infrastructure that helps children in kindergarten through eighth grade travel to school safely. Franklin County Engineer Adam Fowler's office presented all five resolutions, which target roads including Arnsby Road, Dunloe Road, Madison School Drive, Graystone Drive, Sedalia Drive, Sundale Road, and Sundale Place South.
The improvements address a straightforward problem: children in these neighborhoods currently lack the infrastructure they need to get to school without walking in traffic. Safe Routes to Schools funding exists to solve exactly that, building the physical conditions that make it possible for kids to walk or ride without putting themselves at risk.
Nick Soulas, government affairs liaison for the Engineer's office, told commissioners the five resolutions represent the first step in the county's multi-stage legislative process. The work will move through additional approval phases before construction can begin. Soulas also noted that this program is typically reimbursed at 100 percent by Safe Routes to Schools dollars, meaning the investment comes at no direct cost to the county.
All five resolutions were adopted unanimously.
