Franklin County is investing in aviation career exposure for young people who might not otherwise find their way into the industry, approving a $40,250 grant for a week-long program that puts youth inside actual aviation facilities and aboard small aircraft.

The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously on June 23, 2026, to approve Resolution 0427-26, authorizing a grant agreement with Buckeye Tigers Aviation through the Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development. The program serves approximately 25 to 30 youth between the ages of 12 and 18.

Participants visit aviation facilities and organizations across Central Ohio, including the Federal Aviation Administration control tower at John Glenn Columbus International Airport and the National Museum of the United States Air Force in Dayton. The program also includes a 30-minute introductory flight experience aboard a small aircraft provided by Capital City Aviation and the Ohio State University Airport.

Beyond the flights and facility tours, the program connects youth to career fairs at Columbus City Schools, COSI, Afrocentric Early College High School, Columbus East High School, and homeschool settings. The goal is to increase awareness of aviation careers and build the kind of early exposure that leads to workforce and educational pursuit in the industry.

Buckeye Tigers Aviation is a Franklin County-based nonprofit whose programming is delivered through a network of aviation professionals and community members. Andrew Pierce, Director of Buckeye Tigers Aviation, and Jerome Willis, Director of Columbus ACE Academy, were present at the session.

Director Andrena Austin of the Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development presented the resolution. The initiative aligns with Rise Together Blueprint Goals 9, 11, and 13.
