Youth soccer, cultural programming, and community-wide economic activity came together last spring under one county-backed initiative. Now the Board has made it official.
The Franklin County Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 403-26 at the June 16, 2026 General Session, authorizing a $67,530 grant agreement with the New American Heritage Sports League. The grant retroactively supports the 2026 Ohio Somali Week Spring Cup, a multi-day youth sports and cultural event held earlier this year.
The event combined a youth soccer tournament with cultural programming, outreach and promotional activities, transportation support, meals, and coordinated event safety measures. It activated multiple Franklin County venues, supported local vendor participation, and generated community engagement through hospitality operations. Andrena Austin, Director of Economic Engagement and Community Development, presented the item and noted the partnership was developed in collaboration with the Office of Economic Development and Planning and with support from the Prosecutor's Office.
Austin said the initiative aligns with Goals 11 and 13 of the Rise Together Blueprint, connecting to the county's focus on youth engagement, community connectivity, and economic opportunities that contribute to resident well-being.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the resolution.
