Franklin County Board of Commissioners
When a Franklin County resident can no longer make decisions for themselves, the guardianship process that follows can be difficult to navigate without legal help. A renewed county investment is making that help more available.
The Board of Commissioners approved Resolution 397-26 at the June 16, 2026 General Session, authorizing a contract extension and modification with Legal Aid Society of Southeast and Central Ohio. The agreement extends the organization's work providing limited-scope legal assistance and self-guided tools to unrepresented parties in adult guardianship cases before Probate Court. The modification adds $150,000 to the existing contract, bringing the total to $220,000, with an updated expiration date of June 1, 2028.
Legal Aid serves residents in Franklin County guardianship cases who are not represented by an attorney. The population primarily includes adults who are not able to care for themselves and who need someone appointed to advocate for their medical and other supportive needs. The Guardianship Resource Center, which the contract supports, also provides inclusive self-guided tools designed to help unrepresented filers navigate the process.
Kelly Green, Chief Magistrate of the Franklin County Probate Court, presented the item and noted that the work aligns with Goal 9 of the Rise Together Blueprint.
The Board voted unanimously to approve the resolution.
