Franklin County Board of Commissioners I Franklin County Office on Aging

Family caregivers of people living with dementia in Franklin County will have access to a new peer mentoring program, funded through a $75,000 grant the Board approved July 14.

Resolution 0485-26 authorizes a grant agreement with the Ohio State University Foundation to bring the PIECR program to the county's Office on Aging. The program pairs current caregivers with trained former caregivers who have firsthand experience navigating the emotional, physical, and practical demands of dementia care, through structured one-on-one mentorship.

Laurice Cohens, Chief Financial Officer for the Office on Aging, told commissioners the program is designed to reduce caregiver stress, anxiety, depression, and isolation while improving confidence and overall quality of life. It was developed and evaluated by Ohio State and has shown promising outcomes as a culturally responsive support model.

The grant covers the remainder of the 2026 calendar year and supports goal nine of the county's Rise Together Blueprint. The resolution passed, with Commissioner Boyce abstaining.
