Franklin County Board of Commissioners I Franklin County Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development
Franklin County is committing $330,000 to bring major sporting events to Columbus and support the tourism and economic activity they generate.
The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously June 30 to approve Resolution 446-26, a grant agreement with the Greater Columbus Sports Commission to support sports tourism and economic development programming throughout the year. The commission is a value partner to the county in planning and promoting events that draw athletes, visitors, and families to Franklin County.
The grant covers a portfolio of events including the MLK Women's Basketball Showdown, Black Girls Run, and the Gay Softball World Series. Each draws participants and spectators from across the country, generating direct spending at local businesses, hotels, and restaurants and supporting local employment tied to event operations.
Andrena Austin, Director of Economic Engagement and Community Development, told the Board the investment aligns with Rise Together Poverty Blueprint Goals 1 and 3 and supports the department's work across workforce development, economic opportunity, and community engagement. The agreement was developed with the Office of Economic Development and Planning and the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
Linda Logan, CEO of the Greater Columbus Sports Commission, thanked the Board for its continued partnership. "These dollars really help put Columbus and Franklin County on the map," Logan said.
