Franklin County Board of Commissioners I Franklin County Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development
Franklin County will continue funding a leadership program that has shaped nearly 1,200 high school students across central Ohio, including one recent graduate who says it set the direction for her career.
The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously July 7 to approve Resolution 0469-26, a $250,214.71 grant agreement with the Columbus Council on World Affairs to support the Global Scholars Diploma Program. The three-year program serves students across 19 central Ohio school districts, building leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills while connecting them to global issues and career pathways.
In the program's third year, students design and carry out Take Action Projects addressing local problems in education, public health, food security, workforce access, and civic engagement. This year's agreement expands the program further, adding an internship pathway, an alumni engagement initiative, and a larger student advisory council.
Imani Akita, a 2026 graduate of Westerville South High School and the Global Scholars program, told commissioners the experience redirected her path toward public service. Her Take Action Project, a documentary called The Columbus Chronicles, featured seven immigrant students sharing their experiences adapting to a new country. She said the project reinforced why she wants to work in public service and global affairs.
Perla Martinez, Deputy Director with the Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development, presented the item. The agreement supports Goals 9, 11, and 13 of the Rise Together Blueprint.
