Twenty elementary students will spend part of their summer coding, building, and running science experiments, thanks to a new county grant to a Columbus public school.
The Board of Commissioners voted unanimously July 7 to approve Resolution 0471-26, a $25,000 grant agreement with LINC Academy of Columbus to support youth STEM education, academic enrichment, and summer programming. LINC Academy is a free public elementary school serving kindergarten through third grade students.
The grant funds a 10-week summer STEM program built around hands-on learning. Students explore coding fundamentals like sequencing and pattern recognition, tackle engineering design challenges, and run science experiments meant to build creativity and problem-solving skills at an early age. The structure gives families a safe, enriching place for kids during the summer months while building foundational skills for later academic success.
Perla Martinez, Deputy Director with the Office of Economic Engagement and Community Development, presented the item. The grant supports Goals 9, 11, and 13 of the Rise Together Blueprint and the office's priorities around economic opportunity, community engagement, and workforce development.
