About the Coroner
Coroner Dr. Nathaniel R. Overmire
Dr. Nathaniel R. Overmire serves as the Franklin County Coroner, leading one of Ohio’s busiest medicolegal death investigation systems. Since taking office in January 2023 and being elected to a full term in 2024, he has focused on strengthening forensic services, advancing public health initiatives, and building partnerships that enhance the health and safety of Franklin County residents.
A board‑certified family physician, Dr. Overmire brings a distinctive clinical perspective to forensic medicine. His career spans primary care, urgent care, graduate medical education, and public service, giving him firsthand experience caring for individuals and families at every stage of life. He completed his undergraduate studies at Capital University and earned his medical degree from the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he remains actively involved in teaching and mentoring future physicians. He completed his residency at Grant Medical Center, serving as Chief Resident. He is deeply committed to training the next generation of physicians in clinical excellence, compassion, and professionalism.
Throughout his career, Dr. Overmire has been dedicated to public health advocacy, community engagement, and evidence‑based policy. He serves on the Board of Directors for both the Ohio Academy of Family Physicians and the Ohio State Coroners Association. In 2025, he was honored as the Ohio Osteopathic Association’s Family Physician of the Year in recognition of his contributions to medicine and patient care.
Dr. Overmire believes that the work of a coroner extends far beyond determining the cause and manner of death. Through education, prevention, and collaboration, he works to identify trends, inform public policy, and help communities confront challenges such as substance use, violence, suicide, and health disparities. Guided by a philosophy of servant leadership, he is committed to ensuring that every person is treated with dignity, every family with compassion, and that every death teaches us how to better protect the living.
